The Trail

This set of photos are from The so-called Metal Masher Trail north of Moab.  This trail is close to the Golden Spike, but runs a slightly different route.  It starts on the mesa, near the Gemini Bridges, then meanders to the north.  The trail has some very challenging parts and has several overlook points with great views.  Also, you visit points were there was drilling activity as mining companies were looking for uranium.

The Photos

This was a mistake as opposed to a staged photo event.  Kai had just got up Rock Chucker Hill (this obstacle) with his 406.  I figured that I could do thet same, so I pointed the minimog on the same line and put it into low gear.  I new that the first ledge would be steep and result in a large angle, but I did not count on the rear tire hooking under the ledge.  Once the tire hooked, it could no longer turn.  Instead, it turned the truck instead, resulting in me standing on the tailgate.  I was sure that I was going over.   From my point of view, the danger was real.  Kai, on the other hand could see things from a different perspective and knew that I was not in immediate danger and insisted that I hold still for a photo opp.  Note the video in his hand.

You can see the tire wedged under the rock lip that caused this to happen.  I stopped on the bed, I was in no danger of going over backwards, but it sure did feel uncomfortable.  Note that I am hunched over, assuming that the roll bar would have to go to work soon.

Storm approaches the mesa from the south.  Dark and threatening, it was windy and pretty cold.  It was raining on the south mesa.

The storm passed quickly.  This is a view of Arches National Park to the northeast of our position.  Note the highway in the right-center of the photo.

Minimog on Gemini Bridges.  Driving across is very scary, it is a long, long way to the bottom; many hundreds of feet.  It would be a one-way trip home in a body bag if you slipped.

Another view of the Gemini Bridges.

My 411 with the Four Wheeler plates for photos .
